Every individual has a story to tell. A story that is different from the rest and deserves to be delivered in the correct manner. Now, “correct manner,” is not uniform, it’s divergent. Constantly diving in different directions. When i think of a business card, i think of a opportunity to
tell a story. Whether that be for the company i work for, or simply myself. It’s an outlet, a medium, or even a platform to get your story heard in the crucial moments, and in the most important encounters.
There are five characteristics every business card should encompass. Maintaining simplicity, purpose, accuracy, professionalism, and uniqueness. These five aspects carry a business card, and make it effortless for your story to come across with dynamic precision. Leave an instant impression by including all these factors within your card.
A card that showcases simplicity, is a card that presents trustworthiness and loyalty. Choosing simple color hues such as black and white allows trust to be seen. In addition, keeping all your information limited will create a subtle, yet dramatic impact. No matter what business we are in, trust remains the top factor. It’s vital, and can all begin with your business card. White on a card can also interpret clarity, and a clean purpose.
Purpose. A reason, justification, and a motivation for what you do. This factor must be communicated through the text and design on the card. What drives you? Make sure you place the most important information on your card, not your whole resume.
Try not to clutter your card with details, this is a turnoff for many employers. Perhaps, think about a short quote, or six word bio, telling your audience your purpose. This leaves the card not with a clean look, but with something that grabs their attention, leaving them wanting to know more.
The next factors can be combined, and those are accuracy and professionalism. They both go hand in hand. You never want to portray yourself as something that you’re not. Always stay true to yourself and to others. Many people tend to go overboard and end up with a business card that not only represents their self, but in some instances their company. Why be standard? When you can express your uniqueness to every individual you come across? That is the question you should ask yourself before starting to create your business card. There are plenty of standard, black and white, let’s face it, boring business cards floating around out there. That doesn’t mean you should blend in with the crowd or just try to be conservative. Business cards are essentially an extension of who you are and what you bring to the table. You don’t want your business card to read exactly the same as all of your competitors. If you want that job, if you want to make a lasting impression; it all starts with a business card.
As stated previously, a business card is an extension of who you are. So, ask the question who are you? What makes you special? Then transfer it over onto paper. One way you can do this is using bright and bold colors. Rich blues, gold, and bright reds are some examples. However, you don’t want to just have one of those colors make up the entire card. If done this way, your card will be overwhelming and in-creative. The trick is to mix and match colors, but really think about what colors complement each other. If you go to Google and look up complimenting colors, you will find a lot of information. Turquoise mixed with white looks very elegant, bright, and peaceful. Red and light blue also complement each other quite nicely, the complementing colors are endless. What colors represent your personality and express who you are? This is what it comes down to.
So we all know the stereotypical 3.5″ x 2″ business card. Must we stick to the standard? NO! Overnight Prints has a plethora of non-standard business cards. It depends on again who you are, or maybe your job position, and what you do. If you work by the beach or are for example a yoga instructor, you might want to use those lighter tones. In this case the lighter tones work perfectly. It expresses relaxation, peace, and if your job embodies this, you don’t want your business card to communicate and entirely different message.
Of course, the most important part is placing your information and contact on the card. So, this brings us to choosing the correct font. There are an abundant, almost innumerable amounts of fonts circulating. Knowing this, there is one that fits effortlessly and accurately for everyone.
Now for some examples…
If you are in marketing or business, you want a solid, simple, and sophisticated font. My suggestions: “Josefin Sans,” “Adamina,” and a good old “Helvetica.”
Let’s say you’re a copywriter and want to express the beauty of words on paper. My suggestions: “Magnolia,” “Allura,” or “Handwriting-Dakota.”
Maybe you’re a graphic illustrator, my suggestions: Use my personal favorite “Matilde,” “Arcata,” or Josefin Slab.”
Your font should coincide with who you are and what you do. These are only font suggestions, if you find others that you love, don’t be afraid to choose those. Business cards are all about expression and being true to you.

We took Ben’s “Tiger Helm” design and placed it on one of our 4 x 6 postcards. As you can see the difference from photo 1 and photo 2 is that the Tiger Helm is shining and is really highlighting the detail of the design. We loved this illustration because you can see the Spot-UV reflect the light and shine off the design while the rest of the card is standard, and does not have gloss. The design as you can see completely stands out from the card and immediately grasps your attention. Spot-UV is a very unique finishing gloss because it can point out the detail of any design.
This is the back of our standard business card. The owl is coated with a layer of luscious Spot-UV. The Owl against the white card completely stands out and exposes the very fine details of the illustration, and all it takes is a splash of our Spot-UV. There is something about art and designing that captures the heart and makes us feel in awe, and that is what Ben Kwok provided us. He is a graphic artist and illustrator who was born in Taiwan but currently lives in Los Angeles, California. He is passionate about his work and has an undying love for art that is transferred over into every drawing and every illustration that he creates. However, getting to where he is now took some time and took overcoming many obstacles. He loves creating pieces that are filled with complexity and losing himself in the flow of his art. His highly detailed work is what stunned us along with his close attention to detail.
We are thrilled that we had the opportunity to interview the artistic genius, and also combine his beautiful artwork with some of our products which will be in our next blog.
What made Ben Kwok become an illustrator?
“I remember vividly at the age of 7 I wanted to be a veterinarian or a cartoonist. I wanted to be a vet because I absolutely love animals and wanted to work with them for a living. Who knew there was so much education that was required to become a vet and then there was the option of being a cartoonist…
I actually really liked comic books at the time, but I didn’t know the difference so I just went with cartoonist. Fast forward to college, I was still not sure what I wanted to do, so I started off as a Graphic Designer. After my first semester at school, I hated it all. I wanted to draw and not play with fonts and layouts. That’s when I discovered ILLUSTRATION; I never looked back. I get to actually draw with traditional mediums, pencil on paper, paint on canvas, everything made sense. Besides, drawing was the only thing I was good at, so it was easy for me to make the decision to do something art related.”
“The “Ornate Elephant” is my most memorable illustration. I keep telling this story, but I feel like it’s important to share. To back track a bit I hated my job as a graphic artist at a company I will not mention. So I decided to do something about it and look for another job. I was able to find another job and started working for a new company. After only 1 week they decided to lay me off. I was so angry, bitter, lost, and just beaten up by the apparel industry. Since I had no plan B, I decided to just draw for fun. To draw whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted and however I wanted with no one to answer to. That’s what gave birth to my Ornate Elephant drawing. I decided to post it online and that’s when it started getting traction. People really liked the illustration so I decided to focus all of my attention into this style of artwork. What made the Ornate Elephant most memorable was the fact that I drew something for myself and I got to fall in love with art all over again. Even when I was unemployed, had no options, I was so happy and in peace because I found my passion again.”
Talk about your influence by H.R Giger and Alfonse Mucha?
“I fell in love with H.R. Giger while I was in high school and discovered Alfonse Mucha in college. I really love the dark complex images that Giger created.
The fusion of machine and flesh really spoke to me. I love how much detail, texture, and darkness he puts into his artwork. His style was known as “Bio-mechanics”, so since I loved his work so much, I decided to take on the moniker BIOWORKZ, because that’s what all the cool kids were doing back in the day. Then I stumbled upon Alfonse Mucha’s work and it totally blew my mind. His work is almost the exact opposite of Giger’s work. It has lots of rich colors, soft curving lines, with lots of focus on the flow of the lines. Mucha’s work inspired me to play with different line widths and the way every line flows seamlessly into each other. Both Giger and Mucha are masters at what they do and I would like to reach their greatness one day. Giger brought us “Bio-mechanics”, Mucha brought us “Art nouveau,” and I would like to be known as the person that brought “Ornate” artwork into the mainstream.”
