We take a look at summer movies and their posters.
Another year and another season full of larger than life blockbuster movies filling every movie theater across the country. With the release in February of the ultra-successful Black Panther, the movie season officially got off to a roaring bang. Today, we look at some of the upcoming major motion pictures out this summer. We look at a select sampling of posters from each of these upcoming movies.
Upcoming Movies This Summer:
- Deadpool 2 (May 18)
What is typically seen as the first big movie releases of the summer, movies that come out in May are unofficially listed as “Summer” releases. Out this past May 18th was the highly anticipated Deadpool 2, the follow-up sequel to the original Deadpool that came out just three years ago.
We feature one of the more popular “official” movie posters from Deadpool 2. As is the case with just about every Deadpool 2 poster being used to advertise the movie, this particular poster features several of the on-screen characters, with Deadpool himself in a comical situation and pose. This poster features a palette of cool blue colors on the outside turning to fire orange and red colors as your eye moves to the center of the screen. The various characters in the poster are visualized in more of a comic book style with harsh tones, saturated colors and well-defined lines.
- SOLO: A Star Wars Story (May 25)
Just released last week is this mega-blockbuster, SOLO: A Star Wars Story. Centered around the early exploits of the famed Han Solo, widely considered the most likable character from the original trilogy, SOLO: A Star Wars Story features some new and familiar characters in a movie about a large heist Han and a band of outlaws must pull off. A few twists, turns and surprising characters pop-up along in what some analysts believe is the most expensive production and visual effects ever put to film, all make SOLO: A Star Wars Story a thoroughly enjoyable summer flick.
This poster, probably the most popular seen in advertisements and at theaters, features a simple two-tone palette on a light sandy brown background. A colorful upper area depicting a hot, barren landscape on a planet far far away with several of the key characters in the movie taking up most of the center of the poster make up the first two thirds of this composition. The final third part of this poster highlights the SOLO: A Star Wars Story title and release date. While effective, this poster’s design is far removed from the standard layout found in most Star Wars based movies.
- Ocean’s 8 (June 8)
Ocean’s 8, releasing worldwide on June 8th, is a ‘sister’ companion film to the highly popular Ocean’s 11 films starring Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and George Clooney. Ocean’s 8 stars female actresses of equal caliber in terms of popularity to the heavy hitters in Ocean’s 11, including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway, all previous Oscar winners. Similar in tone to the other films, this ‘Ocean’s’ film centers around a group of grifty, talented con artists who come together to plan the heist of an expensive and beautiful necklace worth $150 million.
The selected poster for this movie features a predominately red and black theme with all eight of the female stars prominently placed in a descending order, nearest to furthest. With the tagline “Every Con has Its Pros”, this poster shows that these women are ready for the big score.
- Incredibles 2 (June 15)
The Incredibles was a worldwide sensation when it was released back in 2004. The hit film helped to further solidify Pixar’s reputation as the outright king of animation and storytelling. Now, in 2018, Incredibles 2 hopes to build on that reputation and offer audiences an equally enjoyable time at the theater. All the main characters and actors voicing them are back as Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter head up the family team of super heroes. They battle baddies and try to keep their family together through the trials and tribulations of normal family life.
The poster for the Incredibles 2 carries on the tone, scale and color palette of the first. The Incredibles family appear determined and are jumping into action as danger from behind and above appears ready to strike. We see a red and orange theme with black as the primary highlight. This poster definitely is designed to get your attention.
- Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (June 22)
A sequel to the ultra-successful Jurassic World film from a couple of years ago, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom picks up where the last movie leaves off. The main actors return, with Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt and the Jurassic Park films alum Jeff Goldblum reprising his role as Ian Malcolm. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is sure to thrill audiences with giant, scary dinosaurs and destruction on a large scale once the movie hits theaters on June 22nd.
For the poster to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom we get what appears from the trailers to be from one of the big, impactful scenes of the movie. A large T-Rex towers over the stars of the movie, roaring with its massive foot on a fresh kill. In the background we see a volcano exploding with fire, smoke, lava and projectiles. This poster features mainly a forest theme with several shades of green for both the scenery and the T-Rex. Heavy on scale, this poster is designed so you feel the impact of the dinosaur and the imminent danger posed by the erupting volcano.
- Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado (June 29)
On June 29th comes Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the sequel to the Academy Nominee for Best Picture, Sicario. Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin return in their roles as operative Alejandro Gillick and FBI agent Matt Graver, respectively. It’s not clear whether this film will have the same impact and effect as the first since both director Dennis Villeneuve and Academy Award winner Emily Blunt are not returning for this sequel. But if the recent trailers and this poster are any indication, audiences should be in store for a treat of high tension, superb action and drama.
The poster selected for Sicario: Day of the Soldado features the two main actors and a giant gold skull, roses and what looks like the Angel of Death. This foreboding theme is Mexican inspired and features a stark black background with the eyes of the skull filled with what appears to be soldiers. Overall, this is a poster that is effective and right on target with the overall theme of the movie.
- Ant-Man and the Wasp (July 6)
What is likely to be a fan favorite this summer and probably my personal favorite is this sequel to the movie Ant-Man from 2015. Ant-Man and the Wasp is a sequel set just before the events of Avengers: Infinity War which debuted earlier in the year. This sequel features Scott Lang as a superhero father working with Dr. Hank Pym and his daughter in what is likely an attempt to rescue Pym’s wife from the Quantum Realm. Photos and trailers for the movie reveal characters, cars, trucks, buildings and everyday objects getting shrunk and enlarged, fitting the immediate needs of the film’s heroes.
The poster for Ant-Man and the Wasp has a red and orange/yellow theme and depicts fast motion and speed. All the characters are portrayed within the speed elements of the poster with the main characters portrayed by Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly taking up most of the space. Towards the bottom we see the title and credits along with very small variations of our costumed heroes.
- Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (July 13)
Next up, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is the third installment to the popular animated franchise staring Selena Gomez as Mavis, Adam Sandler as Count Dracula, Andy Samberg as Jonathan and Mel Brooks as Vlad. Set on a cruise ship, this family friendly film sees the nocturnal father, grandfather and daughter teaming up with their monster friends for fun and exploits on the high seas.
This simply designed poster features a purplish red background and the Count himself turned away with his back exposing the tropical underside of his infamous black cape, topped off with green swimming shorts and orange flip-flops.
- Skyscraper (July 13)
On July 13th we get the next mega block buster from A-list actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Staring as former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader William Ford we follow Ford and his frantic ascent up a skyscraper that has been set ablaze. Eager to save his family from a group that has taken them hostage, this Die Hard-esque action thriller is sure to set theaters on fire when viewers check out Skyscraper next month.
The poster to Skyscraper features a lone figure, high above the city skyline, seemingly flying implying a jump with the goal of landing in an open window of a metal and glass tower set on fire. The color palette is brown and red with smoky brown clouds and a high-rise building that seems likely to collapse from the stress of the enormous fire.
- Equalizer 2 (July 20)
July 20th sees the sequel to the hit revenge film, the Equalizer, from 2014. Equalizer 2 stars Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal and Mellisa Leo and is directed by Antoine Fuqua, who directed the first film. The Equalizer 2 sees the main character, Robert McCall back on the job, bringing justice to those who have broken the law.
The poster for this film features the line “There is no equal” and shows the main character’s face with his trademark serious, calculating look. The numeral II against a white background masks parts of Washington’s face and denotes that this is the 2nd part to McCall’s story.
- Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! (July 20)
In this sequel from the inexplicably big hit from 2008, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again attempts to pick up where the original left off. In a movie that hardly anyone saw coming or wanted, this sequel features Amanda Seyfried’s character Sophie, learning more about her mother’s, Meryl Streep, past and learning how to deal with her own pregnancy. All the original characters are back for what is probably the only acting jobs many of these aging stars can get. Ol Parker, the director of many hit movies like Now Is Good, Imagine Me & You, and Now Is Good and did I mention Imagine Me & You? takes the reigns of this (what should have been a direct to DVD) sequel. Hold onto your seats and your sanity as Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Lily James, Cher, Christine Baranski, Stellan Skarsgard and Dominic Cooper sing and dance their way to never getting another part in a movie again.
The poster to this surefire “hit” movie features all of the cast with the best fake smiles each is humanely capable of. All the cast is spread out on a dock, hopefully one that is slowly sinking into the sea. Blue with gold highlights dominate this poster with over-saturation so prominently featured on all the characters faces that they almost look like Halloween pumpkins. Just like in Otis Redding’s hit song “Sittin’ on the Doc of the Bay” you’ll be “wasting time” watching Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
- Mission: Impossible – Fallout (July 27)
The latest installment of the hit Mission: Impossible franchise see 55-year-old Tom Cruise back again in his iconic role as Ethan Hunt. Cruise, famous for performing his own stunts on movies, performed a HALO (high altitude, low opening) jump out of an airplane for an action scene in the movie. After a mission goes wrong, Hunt and his team must finish his mission and right wrongs while hunted by assassins, former allies and new enemies from the CIA. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who worked on The Usual Suspects, X-Men, Jack Reacher, The Wolverine, Edge of Tomorrow and the most recent installment of Mission: Impossible, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, this movie is sure to bring thrilling action and solid storytelling to audiences.
The poster for Mission: Impossible – Fallout features the Ethan Hunt character with gun drawn in a double negative exposure showing what looks like mountain, a helicopter and man dangling from a rope. This is a simple black and white composition with the actor’s name in blood red, across the character’s chest.
- The Meg (August 10)
Lastly, we have the simply titled “The Meg”. At first glance the title does little, if anything, to indicate the content or tone of the movie. In truth however, The Meg refers to the Megalodon; a prehistoric shark, larger in size than nearly any other land or see creature currently alive and was thought to have died out millions of years ago. Jonas Taylor (played by Jason Statham) must race against time to rescue the crew of a deep-sea submersible and ultimately save the day.
The poster for The Meg features a deep blue background of ocean water with dozens of people in kayaks and rafts; some apparently fleeing in fear and others seemingly unaware of approaching danger. The huge Megalodon takes up the bottom half of the screen; a gray giant gliding just below the water with its massive dorsal fin protruding what appears to be at least a couple of stories above the water line.
