One of the scariest things I’ve ever done is paint on canvas. I’m not professionally trained, and the thought of painting anything so permanent was daunting. However, put a craft in front of me, and my fingers itch to try it. I learned two things the day I put paint to canvas: One, it’s a lot less scary than it looks, and two, it’s a surprisingly affordable way to be creative.
Can you match the artist to the art style?* Were the soft seascapes of the 19th century painted by Jackson Pollock? Was Andy Warhol known for politically-charged graffiti? Did Jean-Michel Basquiat lead the pop art movement? Does the name Winslow Homer conjure up images of abstract drip paintings?
August celebrates American Artist Appreciation Month. All these artists have one thing in common – countless admirers who appreciated their genius. Overnight Prints celebrates its own customers who are painting their own paths one brush stroke at a time: Danamarie Hosler, Haylee McFarland, Randy Groden and Francesca Berrini.
Sure, a picture is worth a thousand words, but what are the two words photographers don’t often hear? Thank you! From silhouettes to selfies, National Photography Month celebrates those behind the lens every May.
Overnight Prints is putting the spotlight on a few customers who capture everything from the artistry of dance to the beauty of urban architecture.

Inspirational posters catch a lot of flak, but the effect of a motivating home office space should not be underplayed. Decor that energizes and effects you can definitely bring focus to your work. If you’re seeing clients at home, it communicates messaging about your brand and professional ethos.
So, whether your working motto is “seize the day” or “hang in there, kitty,” a cool, motivational print or gallery wall can have a real effect on your business. Here are some ideas to perk up your home office. You’ll feel ready to bring on the day, no matter what it has in store for you.
For the attorney: minimalist think pieces
Clients come to you because you’re able to distill complicated legalese down to its most essential phrasings. An Escher-inspired pencil or ink drawing shows that you’re capable of seeing past what’s on the surface, while the clean lines echo the seriousness you bring to each case.
For the counselor: simple works with a slight sense of humor
If you’re a professional psychologist or social worker, you could probably use a laugh anywhere you can get it. Offbeat, humorous pieces provide a wink and a nod that will help you cope on those really difficult days.

For the designer: a graphic gallery in unexpected colors
To you, the whole world is an icon just waiting to be designed. Minimalist decor in your office lets the art in your space—and its vibrant, surprising color palette—take center stage, just as it should be.
Via Office Snapshots
For the entrepreneur: Two-toned prints in energizing colors
You may have come up with the world’s next disruptive technology, but you’re not going to get anywhere if your branding’s not on point. That means a panel of thought-provoking prints in a pulsing, electric shade that throbs like a neuron—perfect for someone about to capture the energy of the next zeitgeist.
Via Elle Decor
For the scientist: Artistic renderings of charts and maps
Who says science and art don’t mix well? The beautiful watercolor above begs to differ. Gorgeous works along science-y themes let others appreciate your versatility—and perhaps bring a new awareness of the beauty of the STEM world.
Via Apartment 34
For the real estate agent: Lush black and white photos with eclectic flair
Yes, you’re selling the comforts of home—but today’s buyers want spaces serving as design statements, too. A few rich, interesting photos juxtaposed with warm, blonde wood reflects that image to your clients, letting them know they’re in safe hands with you.

The event has ended, the caterer’s bills have been settled, and the photos posted online. The thank you notes and well wishes have been written—and received. There’s just one thing left to do, and it’s weighing you down with the heft of 100 unused posters.
For the sake of your closet space, something really needs to be done with the leftover print materials you never got to use. Throw them away? After all the work you put in, creating the design and ordering the prints—not to mention paying for them? No thank you! Thankfully, you don’t have to trash your design—you can re-purpose it into one of these clever projects.
Christmas gifts, party favors, and wedding presents—many things could use a tiny, homemade attachment. This look uses brown paper craft tags and a sewing machine to give the cards a vintage touch. They appear as though they were swiped straight from a Victorian curio cabinet.
Geometric cardboard lamp
If you’re like most people, you probably don’t associate cardboard with lamps. That’s just what this tutorial will get you—and no, you don’t have to be an origami wizard to do it. Make sure to use an LED bulb, since it will make your light stay nice and cool.
Grown up mobile
Why should kids get to have all the fun? This chic mobile re-purposes triangle-shaped pieces of leftover paper for an effect that’s both eye-catching and whimsical. It would work well in a nursery however, it’s also mature enough to bring to your craft room, bedroom or kitchen.
Recycled paper basket
If you’re less attached to your print’s aesthetic and are good with an X-acto knife, you may be the perfect candidate for this recycled paper tutorial. It will take some patience, but at the end, you’ll have the perfect pint-sized vessel for fruit, candy, toiletries, and potpourri.
That’s one way to give a new life to your leftovers!

There are countless businesses failing to get all they can out of print marketing. They order the bare minimum and move on. Printing offers each business the opportunity to set themselves apart from the rest. It comes down to not knowing, and understanding the potential of what print marketing can offer. All it takes is a splash of the right gloss to turn your marketing collateral into something exciting.
What Are The Differences?
Let’s start with “Full-UV Gloss.” This particular coating presents an outstanding shiny layer that is very rich when applied to paper. The product will be nothing short of eye-catching due to its lustrous appearance. Other than its captivating display, Full-UV possesses various benefits such as…
- This gloss does a fantastic job at holding onto its superior quality and fighting off damage. If you plan to advertise your business through mailing Postcards, Full-UV is the ideal choice. It will resist smudging, marks, and any abrasion that may occur. Due to its substantial layer it can defend against most wear and tear.
- This gloss is known to bring out the crisp and fine details. Photography, logos, and text will have a precise look and finish.
- When Full-UV is applied to any print product it speeds up the drying process. This leads to faster production and shipping times for you!
So, I bet you noticed the “UV” at the end and the close resemblance it shares with “Full-UV.” What we call Spot-UV is in-fact similar to Full. The only difference is this gloss is only used on select portions of the product. Using this gloss is ideal for any marketing and advertising because it has the ability to steal the show. Do you have a business? Looking for a better way to capture your audiences attention? Well, your solution is Spot-UV and here is why.
Catches Attention Instantly
Spotlight targeted areas on your products by using Spot-UV. Since it will be in select portions of the product, your customers will instantly be drawn to the spectacular shine. Voila! You have strategically captured your audiences attention, just like that.
Imagine that pearly shimmer matched with a smooth finish. This is what you get with Satin Matte Gloss. What makes this card special and different from the rest?
Shines Without Glare
This gloss has an outstanding shine that leaves out the reflection and glare which most satin cards have. If you want to look professional, while adding a modern twist, this gloss is just for you.
Why be standard? When you can express your uniqueness to every individual you come across? That is the question you should ask yourself before starting to create your business card. There are plenty of standard, black and white, let’s face it, boring business cards floating around out there. That doesn’t mean you should blend in with the crowd or just try to be conservative. Business cards are essentially an extension of who you are and what you bring to the table. You don’t want your business card to read exactly the same as all of your competitors. If you want that job, if you want to make a lasting impression; it all starts with a business card.
As stated previously, a business card is an extension of who you are. So, ask the question who are you? What makes you special? Then transfer it over onto paper. One way you can do this is using bright and bold colors. Rich blues, gold, and bright reds are some examples. However, you don’t want to just have one of those colors make up the entire card. If done this way, your card will be overwhelming and in-creative. The trick is to mix and match colors, but really think about what colors complement each other. If you go to Google and look up complimenting colors, you will find a lot of information. Turquoise mixed with white looks very elegant, bright, and peaceful. Red and light blue also complement each other quite nicely, the complementing colors are endless. What colors represent your personality and express who you are? This is what it comes down to.
So we all know the stereotypical 3.5″ x 2″ business card. Must we stick to the standard? NO! Overnight Prints has a plethora of non-standard business cards. Why not completely change the shape of your business card to let’s say a 3″ x 3″ Circle Business Card? Or what about a 2.5″ x 2.5″ Square Business Card? Or maybe you can still keep that standard size but spice it up with extra thick 34pt card stock with our FAT Business Card. These cards automatically stick out with either their distinguished shape or superior thickness. Whoever you give your card to will notice and remember you just by the quality, shape, and texture of an Overnight Prints business card. Once you place your color using 4:4 full color printing, your card will already be expressing quality and uniqueness and these are two factors that matter.
Now, going back to color. They don’t have to be extremely bold to be considered unique. They can also be subdued, light, and tranquil. It depends on again who you are, or maybe your job position, and what you do. If you work by the beach or are for example a yoga instructor, you might want to use those lighter tones. In this case the lighter tones work perfectly. It expresses relaxation, peace, and if your job embodies this, you don’t want your business card to communicate and entirely different message.
Of course, the most important part is placing your information and contact on the card. So, this brings us to choosing the correct font. There are an abundant, almost innumerable amounts of fonts circulating. Knowing this, there is one that fits effortlessly and accurately for everyone.
Now for some examples…
If you are in marketing or business, you want a solid, simple, and sophisticated font. My suggestions: “Josefin Sans,” “Adamina,” and a good old “Helvetica.”
Let’s say you’re a copywriter and want to express the beauty of words on paper. My suggestions: “Magnolia,” “Allura,” or “Handwriting-Dakota.”
Maybe you’re a graphic illustrator, my suggestions: Use my personal favorite “Matilde,” “Arcata,” or Josefin Slab.”
Your font should coincide with who you are and what you do. These are only font suggestions, if you find others that you love, don’t be afraid to choose those. Business cards are all about expression and being true to you.
If you have never thought about your business card or just rushed through the process. It’s time to really think about your business card. You want to make great impressions not average ones, and you want to get that job, not be disregarded. Business cards are not only essential they are critical and vital in establishing relationships and making connections that last.

When you think of logos you most likely think of the great ones, the memorable, and the ones that stick with you. When you start thinking about creating a logo for your company remember it has to be unique enough to make a lasting impression. Creating a one-of-a-kind logo is not by any means easy. It requires time, patience, and many steps. Before you start creating your very own logo make sure you don’t forget to consider these key points.
1.) What colors best suit your company?
- Colors are a way of expression and they bring out emotions in everyone. All colors bring out different emotions and it’s necessary to choose colors that represent what your company stands for. If you choose red as your color, it will be active, passionate, and intense. One example is Red Bull, they use the color red and it’s a perfect choice for their company. Red Bull is supposed to supply their customers with energy which will keep them active throughout the day.
So just what do these colors express? Here is an infographic to further explain some of the most popular colors.
2.) Look at your selection of fonts
- Fonts are very similar to colors because they also spark emotion. If your company is energetic and fun you will want to go with a font that expresses those emotions. If your company is supposed to express strength and being bold such as Under Armour, it’s probably best not to choose a cursive, floral font. Selecting a font is just as important as the color because of the emotion factor. It’s all about matching who and what your company is. Fonts can help convey messages to customers instantly.
3.) Understanding the many different logo types
- This can be a bit tricky because there are so many types of logos and aspects to consider. You have to examine how it will look across your overall company collateral. Then consider the emotional response your customers will have. The emotional response all comes back to choosing the right colors and fonts. A company logo isn’t just a symbol, it’s the core of the company. In many cases it’s the first thing your customers see and you want them to respond in a positive way. Let’s go over some of the top types of logos.
1. Lettermark Logo
Lettermarks are using the initials of the company or the first letter of the company. Many companies such as HP and Chanel use this method because it’s more appealing. Using the whole name would be too long, or perhaps the name is hard to pronounce. These are all reasons why companies would choose the Lettermark type of logo. Take ABC for example, it’s full company name is “American Broadcasting Company.” The full name is too long and wouldn’t be as easy to remember. Creating a lettermark for certain companies makes it easier for customers to recollect. 2. Symbol Logo
Using a symbol is harder to come up with but often times creates more of an impact. If you’re planning on having a big business having a symbol logo is the way to go. The reason is symbol logos are much easier for people to remember because they are simple and unique. The fun part about symbol Logos is you can create clever twist within them which highlights what your company does. Just take companies like the Goodwill and Baskin Robbins for Example.
3. Wordmark Logo
These are going to be custom designed fonts which spell out the whole name of the company. These typically use a creative arrangement that will leave not only a lasting impression but a unique logo. It solely represents the company on its use of creatively adding flare to the original name. This type of logo can be easily read and understood since they are using the exact company name. Be prepared to get innovative and think of something new, because you want the finished product to inspire your customers and one of the best examples up-to-date is Visa.
4. Emblem Logo
The emblem logo is continually growing. This logo uses the company name within a detailed design. Emblem logos give the best of both worlds, meaning you can use the full name of your company and a design to give it distinction. This logo is very popular because it combines the two, from famous ones to the newest; they are all great.
Having a solid understanding of what the types of logos are and why companies use them should help you pick the correct layout for your own. Colors and fonts are the first aspect of the logo. Perhaps these two characteristics are the most important. Before diving into logo design really do your research and apply it to your company. Last but not least don’t be afraid to use designers, and preferably those at Overnight Prints.

Are you tired of using the same standard looking print products? If you are, all it takes is one simple addition to completely change the look of your business card. I’m talking about Spot-UV. If you have never heard of Spot-UV, it’s a shiny added layer applied to a design or portion of print products such as business cards, postcards, and posters.
Spot-UV will give attention and dramatize an important part of your card or product in which you want to emphasize. Any time light hits the Spot-UV it shines, shimmers, and stands out. For instance, if you have your company logo, company name, or design you can put the spotlight onto this and bring it out by giving that section a high-gloss, very luminous effect.
We were extremely happy to have the chance to work with Ben Kwok, who is an amazing visual designer and illustrator. If you want to know more about Ben, please read our previous blog post entitled “Artistic Genius Ben Kwok Speaks.” In today’s blog we used Ben’s outstanding and highly intricate work to showcase the strong and eye-catching effect of Spot-UV.
We took Ben’s “Tiger Helm” design and placed it on one of our 4 x 6 postcards. As you can see the difference from photo 1 and photo 2 is that the Tiger Helm is shining and is really highlighting the detail of the design. We loved this illustration because you can see the Spot-UV reflect the light and shine off the design while the rest of the card is standard, and does not have gloss. The design as you can see completely stands out from the card and immediately grasps your attention. Spot-UV is a very unique finishing gloss because it can point out the detail of any design.
This is the back of our standard business card. The owl is coated with a layer of luscious Spot-UV. The Owl against the white card completely stands out and exposes the very fine details of the illustration, and all it takes is a splash of our Spot-UV. The back of any business card is extremely valuable. The reason is you have all of your contact information in the front, so no need to state the same on the back. Show who you are and your personality on the back side and you will have yourself an unforgettable business card. Since Ben is an illustrator it’s important for him to of course showcase his art and work and the back of the card does it nicely. While Spot-UV brings the card to life it also protects it from wear and tear and keeps it looking new. Don’t let the back of your business card go to waste.
Spot-UV isn’t only for business cards, it can be used for an array of printing products and as we can see it greatly enhances the overall look. The“Ornate Elephant,” was placed on our 5 x 7 postcard and also is using Spot-UV. As you can see in the first image of the”Ornate Elephant,” is shining quite a bit. If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary and highly impressive, Spot-UV can enhance anything from a company name to a highly intricate design such as the illustrations we used from visual designer and illustrator Ben Kwok. Start using our one-of-a-kind Spot-UV today and see the difference.

As Kermit sings, “It’s not easy being green.” Especially if you’re involved in the printing or paper industry.
We all like white paper. It’s easier to read and easier to print on. But paper isn’t naturally white. To make paper white requires bleaching. White, good; bleaching—using chlorine, bad.
I was initially confused by the alphabet soup of claims for chlorine free paper products. Read more
In an ever-changing design environment, a designer really needs to have a collection of contemporary and cool fonts in their font arsenal to keep their designs looking fresh and modern! Here are 20 of our favorite new free fonts to add to your collection. The list consists of some beautiful fonts for long copy and general design use as well as some sublime experimental typefaces!
Although I’m a Mac guy and I personally like the “cold metal” look of my G5, I’m not keen on Steve Wozniaks fancy laser-cut stainless steel number. It’s not very practical, affordable, or even particularly attractive! I prefer Steve Jobs simple business card design from the 70’s. Despite its “dated” font (Motter Tektura – the old Apple font) it has a simple elegance.
I work with these products all the time and I’m often being told by our customers how they’ve used our print products in new and interesting ways. After discussing this subject with some of our customers, I was given a “top 3” list of their favorite “alternative” uses for our print products.

Mear One is a true artist – exceptionally skilled, incredibly intelligent, totally unique, and absolutely devoted to his craft. Read his interview about his murals and graffiti pieces have made him world-renowned. As a graffiti artist, his work goes far beyond the typical graffiti art that we see on bridges and street corners and has been elevated into the realms of “high art”. His works of art have a style and sophistication that is unmatched by any of his street art contemporaries.

Your Comp Card should act as a visual resume. They serve as a standardized way for models and entertainers to promote themselves. Generally, they refer to an 8.5” x5.5” postcard. However, it’s not uncommon to create a 4″ x 6″, 8″ x 10″ or other flyer -sized version. The most important aspect of creating a comp card is to communicate your visual resume as effectively as possible.
I was recently contacted by Kristen Acampora, a Junior at Maryland Institute College of Art who wanted to feature her business card design on our blog site. Upon visiting her blogspot, I was really surprised at the excellent illustration work being produced by the students and recent graduates at Maryland.
I’d like to help promote their work and share their wonderful illustrations with the readers of this blog:
A few weeks ago I posted a blog asking Overnight Prints customers and blog visitors to send me links to their work so that I could showcase their work on this blog. The response was incredible! The following list of designers and their work is representative of the diverse, unique, and talented customers that we have!
Ryan Claytor is a comic book creator and Professor at the Michigan State University and the University of Michigan Flint. His series of books “And Then One Day” are autobiographical works that follow Ryan’s conversations with the various people in his life. I talked to Ryan about his work and his love of comic books.
Many designers and other Overnight Prints product users order from us because of our fantastic offset print color output. However, there are ways to ensure that you can better replicate the color that you see onscreen, with the print color output that you will receive from OvernightPrints.com. By adding and adjusting your Photoshop color profiles, you will more effectively recreate the onscreen version of your design.
My own personal list of favorite design sites. The combination of these sites will offer designers a world of knowledge, inspiration, and resource.
Being a design and marketing professional for a fair few years now, I feel reasonably justified in presenting you with my personal list of truly dreadful fonts – such as Comic Sans!
Personally, I find these fonts utterly detestable and I cringe every time I see them being used. If you regularly use these fonts, or are using these fonts, then my advice is to STOP using them! I am not in the minority in my condemnation of these typographical eyesores!
Ever have this happen? A publication asks you to send a logo or photo to them, so you take time out of your busy day, find the logo or image on your hard drive and send it over. Later that day, someone from the production department emails you that you’ve sent the wrong file format. Huh?
Or perhaps you put together a gorgeous Powerpoint presentation with photos you downloaded from the web, then went to print handouts from the file, only to discover the pictures are all jaggy and weird looking! What’s going on?
Well, my friend—you’re experiencing the resolution blues. (Don’t worry—you’re not alone.)
Look beyond your computer’s installed fonts. Limiting your selection to fonts that are installed on 90% of all computers runs the risk of presenting a message that is cliche and unimaginative. I’ve seen headlines in Papyrus for everything from Christian rock bands to homemade candles. Can one font really be right for so many disparate products? Looking beyond your computer’s installed fonts will free you to find THE ONE font that really conveys the message of your brand.
